Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers 1995 Tour!
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are excited to kick off their 1995 concert tour on February 28, in Louisville, Kentucky! The band will travel around the U.S. and Canada on a 51 date tour, ending at the Hollywood Bowl in California on June 9.
Featuring Pete Droge as the opening act, the first leg of the tour will last through March 23. The Jayhawks will open for the band during the second leg of the tour, April 1 through May 6. Tom and the Heartbreakers' good friends, Scott Thurston and Steve Ferrone, will perform with the band during the entire tour.
During a recent interview with VH1, Tom discussed the much anticipated 1995 Tour, "I'd like to really get back into a musical show, not a lot of bells and whistles... mostly music..."
Looking forward to this tour, Tom expressed his appreciation for the band's many fans. "...We always have very good audiences and fans ... they really are what it's all about ... You know, I kind of dig them in a very personal way ... I still love to get up and sing to people that are interested in hearing it..."

Tom Petty
Are you one of the 250 LUCKY fans who purchased a Wildflowers CD and found an authentic "Tom Petty" autograph inside? Tom celebrated the release of his new album by personally autographing a limited number of Wildflowers CDs for distribution around the country.
A specially designed "plain brown wrapper" slipcase covered the jewelbox of the first 500,000 copies. Subsequent copies of the CDs were released without the slipcase (and without the possible autograph).
Collectors, take note: the CDs with the slipcover have a slightly different booklet front cover than the non-slipcover CDs.

Wildflowers
With the release of his second solo album, Wildflowers, Tom Petty made his Warner Bros. debut. Produced by Rick Rubin, together with Tom and Heartbreaker Mike Campbell, it was definitely worth waiting for!
Wildflowers offers 15 new songs, 13 written solely by Tom, and 2 co-written by Tom and Mike. Joining Tom on the album are Heartbreakers Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench and Howie Epstein. Ringo Starr drums on "To Find A Friend," and Carl Wilson sings backing vocals on "Honeybee." Other guest artists include Steve Ferrrone (drums), Lenny Castro (percussion), and Phil Jones (percussion). Several songs feature orchestral arrangements by Michael Kamen.
Tom has described Wildflowers as using, "no modern conviniences, it's all played by hand ... which is really what I prefer ... very guitar-based, lots of textures." "There's a lot of different sounds, but they're all organic sounds. There are no synthesizers on the record, no digital anything, no sampling, no computers."

Video News
Many fans have enthusiastically written to Tom to express their delight with the first video from Wildflowers, "You Don't Know How It Feels." The video was created with 6 different sets built in a circle around a rotating turntable, giving an effect of Tom singing into a microphone while various unusual background settings move behind him, continually changing. Phil Joanou directed the video in one take, with no editing.
The video was premiered on MTV at the end of a one-hour interview special, "Tom Petty's Video Box Set." During the special, Tom recounted several amusing anecdotes about various TP&HB videos.
The second video from the album is "You Wreck Me." Filmed in November in New York City during rehearsals for Late Night with David Letterman, the video was directed by Martyn Atkins, Tom's art director for Wildflowers. It features a great came by Tom's orange cat groovin' across the lawn! For the interesting visual effects in the video, Tom revealed that he borrowed from the film style of the 1960's movie, "The Thomas Crown Affair."
The third single from Wildflowers will be "It's Good To Be King," with a video directed by Peter Care. At press time, the release date has yet to be announced.

TV News
On November 19, fans were treated to performances of "You Don't Know How It Feels" and "Honeybee" by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers on Saturday Night Live. Dave Grohl from Nirvana added a unique and very different "shimmering cymbals" look to the band while sitting in on drums.
Regarding Dave Grohl, Tom explained on Prodigy Online, "He's one of my favorite drummers and I just phoned him up and asked him to help me out on Saturday Night Live. He's doing me a favor."
Tom and the Heartbreakers appeared on Late Night with David Letterman (with Steve Ferrone on drums this time) on November 21, and knocked out a killer version of "You Wreck Me." Tom treated us to his wry sense of humor when David Letterman joked with him about wanting to be a Heartbreaker. With an amused grin, Tom replied, "We could always work you in as a roadie!" The band had most recently performed on Letterman on September 9.
A special thank you to fans who have written to convey your excitement about the T.V. shows!
VH1 named Tom Petty their November "Artist of the Month," and regularly aired interviews, studio segments and videos.

Alternative Petty
If you haven't already heard it, be sure to check out the CD, You Got Lucky: A Tribute To Tom Petty. Featuring independent alternative bands performing their versions of the Tom Petty songs that influenced them, the CD is a very original and really cool interpretion of TP's music!
When asked about the CD, Tom commented, "I think it was one of my more flattering moments as a musician and a writer." "They really all captured the essence of the songs ... without exception ... I really loved it."
Several bands from the CD performed at a free concert, "You Got Lucky: A Live Tribute To Tom Petty," held at the Los Angeles House of Blues on January 9, 1995. Part of the concert was broadcast on ABC's In Concert on February 3.

Congratulations!
Tom's video for "Mary Jane's Last Dance" emerged as the winner of the "Best Male Video" award at MTV's 1994 annual Video Music Awards. TB&HB performed the song live during the show.
Tom was also presented with the prestigious "Video Vanguard Award," honoring his entire body of video work.
A compilation of his films was shown to the audience, then Tom personally accepted the award, noting, "I just try to put something on the screen every time that's a little different, something for you to look at, something to make you smile..."

Changes...
It was announced on October 20, 1994, that Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers had parted ways with Stan Lynch, who left the band after 19 years of their original drummer. Most recently, Stan has been working as a songwriter and/or producer with such artists as Don Henley, the Eagles, Leonard Cohen, and the Mavericks.
No immediate replacement is being sough. Steve Ferrone, who played drums for Tom on Wildflowers, will accompany TP&HB on their 1995 Tour. Steve appeared with the band on Late Night with David Letterman and can be seen in the "You Wreck Me" video.

Watch for Bonnie Raitt's current video for "You Got It," (written by Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne).
Our very own Heartbreaker, Benmont Tench, can be seen playing keyboards and having a good ol' time! The song is one of the highlights on the soundtrack and in the movie, "Boys On The Side."

Mr. December!
Have you seen the Rolling Stone 40th Anniversary of Rock & Roll 1995 Calendar? Mark Seliger's great photo of Tom Petty sitting comfortably (!?) on a camel is featured on the cover and for the whole month of December!
The Introduction to the calendar states, "Here, Rolling Stone is pleased to celebrated the 40th anniversary of rock & roll by presenting some of the magazine's best portraits of those artists who've invented - and continued to re-invent - the music called rock & roll."
We certainly agree with that!
It's a MUST for any Tom Petty fan!

A Bridge Built With Music
On October 1st and 2nd, a crowd of VERY LUCKY fans saw and heard a Live preview of a few songs from Wildflowers!
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were among the all-star line-up of musicians who appeared live at Neil Young's 8th Annual Bridge School Benefit Concert. Held in Mountain View, California, near San Francisco, the concert is produced to raise funds for the Bridge School, a school co-founded by Neil's wife, Pegi, for children with severe communication and physical challenges.
The concert is unique in many ways, not the least is the fact that each ot the Bridge School children sit center-stage behind the artists during the entire concert!
Over the years, the Bridge School Concert has become something of a legend in the San Francisco Bay area, with a reputation for gathering the greatest names in Rock - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Elton John, Don Henley, Simon and Garfunkle, etc., etc. 1994 was no exception! For the first time ever, they expanded the concert to two days of performances. The eclectic assortment of musicians included acts ranging from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers to Pearl Jam, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, The Indigo Girls, Al Jourgenson and Paul Barkey of Ministry, Mazzy Star and Pete Droge.
Tom Petty is the only artist (other than Neil Young) who has appeared at the concert 4 times: in 1986 solo and with Benmont Tench for 2 songs; and in 1988, 1989 and 1994 with all the Heartbreakers!
Featuring mostly acoustic performances, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers treated the crowd to their first public live performances of "You Don't Know How It Feels," "Wildflowers," and "Time To Move On." Fans were also introduced to hilarious renditions of "Girl on LSD." Other songs performed by TP&HB included "I Won't Back Down," "Runnin' Down A Dream," "Mary Jane's Last Dance," and a stirring arrangement of "Learning To Fly" showcasing Benmont on piano.
TP&HB's enthusiastic sets brought the audience to their feet both days. After their triumphant show the second day, Tom, Mike, Benmont, Howie, Stan (and Scott Thurston) returned to the stage for an encore and wowed the crowd with a rousing version of John Cale's "Thirteen Days."
During Pearl Jam's sets both days, the audience was pleasantly surprised with some extra piano accompaniment courtesy of our very versatile Benmont Tench!
The Sunday show (October 2nd) was a historic and bittersweet show for TP&HB fans ... it was Stan Lynch's last concert performance with the band.
It these shows were even a hint of what their 1995 Tour will be like ... the tour should be HOT!
- Cathy B.
