Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers will perform in the O'Connell Center Nov. 4, followed by a concert starring Australian rockers INXS on Nov. 6, say sources close to Student Government Productions.

With Gator Growl sandwiched in between on the 5th, it's looking like a Homecoming weekend with serious firepower.

Plans are being made to broadcast the Petty show nationwide via the Westwood One radio network. Sources say the group will play only one or two other concerts on this mini-tour, which will be followed by the release of their "Greatest Hits" album Nov. 9.

SGP chairman Brett Norensberg says he'll announce ticket prices and availability dates for both shows in the near future.

"I'm just glad to be able to bring both these shows to University of Florida students as well as the Gainesville population," Norensberg adds.

Petty -- born, raised, and musically educated in Gainesville -- hasn't played here since 1991. Reportedly, he'll follow the anthology album with a solo project.

INXS, fronted by charismatic vocalist Michael Hutchence, will shortly release a conceptual video, "The Gift," followed by a new album Nov. 3.

Details are thus far sketchy; stay tuned to this column for the latest on the boffo '93 Homecoming weekend.
